Correa reflexa 'Carpenter's Rocks'
This is clearly one of the best of the Australian fuchsias introduced to date.
Actually its only relationship to the true fuchsias lies in the form of the
flowers, for this is a member of the citrus family (Rutaceae). It is a bushy,
nearly round shrub, growing 3-4 feet high and intricately branched. Paired along
the stems are narrowly heart- shaped ½-1" leaves. These are dark green and shiny
above, paler beneath. Nodding beneath them from fall to spring are cheery red
1" bells with chartreuse tips. Like other correas it has many uses, displayed
alone, in groups or in shrubby borders. It is easily grown in sun or shade near
the coast, part shade inland, given well-drained non-alkaline soil and moderate
to occasional watering when established. It is hardy to 20-25° F.
