ALANGIUM [platanifolium]. This beautiful small tree was received from Forestfarm as A. chinense. However, both leaf shape and flower color seem to demand the designation given here. Either way, you have probably never heard of it. This is a beautiful large shrub or small tree, possibly to 30 high, well-branched and nearly round in profile. During the growing season the branches are hidden by bright green glossy leaves, up to 8" long, of unusual form. They are round in outline with several shallow, pointed lobes, the spaces between them crescent-shaped. Nestled among them in early summer are small clusters of flared, fragrant white flowers. Alangium is winter-deciduous in colder areas. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate to regular watering. Hardy to around 10oF.
