ANISODONTEA x hypomandarum. S. Africa. A shrubby mallow, growing about 4' tall, with slender, closely branched stems. The leaves are 3-lobed and toothed, 1-2" long, and bright green in color. Pink hibiscus-like blossoms with reddish centers, a bit under 1" broad, are sprinkled over the plants most of the year, most heavily in spring and fall. The original, unnamed clone now seems to be everywhere in the trade. A more interesting selection, for those who have the space, is ‘Tara's Wonder’, selected by Randy Baldwin. This is a tall (6'+), robust plant with dark, narrowly lobed leaves and exceptionally large, dark flowers. A companion selection, ‘Tara's Pink’, is distinguished by bushier growth, more broadly lobed leaves, and lighter pink flowers. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate to occasional watering. Hardiness uncertain; evidently 20oF or less.
