CALAMINTHA nepeta (C. nepetoides). Calamint. Southern Europe. We have recently been drawn, by way of the salvias, into the thick of the mint family. Now it is clear that a great many more perennials in that magical low maintenance category so dear to Californians wait to be discovered there. Calamint is a good example: A mounding, bushy plant growing about 2' tall, with dense grey foliage and (in this selection) small clusters of 3/4" lilac pink blossoms borne in summer, resembling those of some of the salvias. It seems quite easy to grow, given sun, ordinary soils, and moderate to occasional watering. Hardy to 15oF or less.
