CRINUM.
An enormous group of Amaryllis relatives, mostly from tropical to sub-tropical
regions. Many have large bulbs and often trunk-like stalks composed of old leaf
bases and topped by crowns of large strap shaped, wavy-edged leaves. The large
flowers resemble those of Amaryllis and are presented in similar, umbrella-like
clusters atop sturdy stalks. They are handsome plants in large containers, and
some will make sizeable thickets in the open garden. C. bulbispermum (longifolium)
has long bluish green leaves, lying close to the ground, and broad-petalled,
deep pink blossoms; C. moorei has stalked leaves, clasped at the
bases to form a trunk-like bundle, and very large pink flowers. C. powelli
Album is a white flowered hybrid with long, narrow leaves.
C. Ellen Bosanquet has broad, bright green
leaves and wide-petalled, nearly red blossoms. Sun or light shade, most soils,
moderate to regular watering in active growth, less during dormancy. Hardy,
in the selections above, to around 20oF.
