ECHINACEA purpurea (Rudbeckia purpurea). Purple coneflower. Eastern U.S. A perennial daisy making compact clumps, with narrowly oval 4-5" basal leaves. In late summer and fall comes a succession of 4" flower heads with dark, cone shaped centers on leafy stems up to 4’ tall. Traditional seed strains are ‘Bright Star’ and ‘Bravado’, with purplish red rays. An even more robust, larger flowered strain is ‘Magnus’. ‘White Star’ has white rays and dark green centers. Sun, most soils, regular watering. Hardy to below 0oF.
