FRANCOA. Chile. Maiden’s wreath. Perennials related to and somewhat resembling the heucheras. They branch freely at the base to form clumps 1-2’ broad, with large, lobed leaves. In summer many branched spikes of small flowers rise above the foliage on 1½’ to 3’ stems. F. ramosa has bright green leaves and white blossoms. F. sonchifolia has heavily purple-tinged leaves and pale pink flowers with a red spot at the base of each petal. A form or possible hybrid of F. sonchifolia, received from Strybing Arboretum, has reddish purple flowers. Sun or part shade near the coast, part shade inland, reasonably well drained soil, moderate watering. Hardy to around 10oF.
