GLORIOSA rothschildiana. Glory lily. Tropics of Asia, Africa. Imagine a vining, broad leaved tiger lily, clinging to any available support with hooked leaf-tips, and you have a fair impression of the Glory Lily. It grows from odd whitish tubers, appearing in mid-spring and climbing 3-6’ by summer. The 4" blossoms are presented and shaped much like those of the tiger lilies, except that the segments are wavy-edged and swept back a bit more. In color they are bright red, margined with yellow. Nearly identical, except to the eyes of trained botanists, and alternately available with this species, is G. superba. Interesting and, at blooming time, spectacular plants for containers and protected nooks in the garden. Winter dormant. Sun or light shade near the coast, part shade inland, well drained soil, moderate watering. Lift and protect the tubers wherever the ground may freeze.
