KIRENGESHOMA. Japan and Korea. These are elegant perennials of the saxifrage family, quite distinct from any of their relatives. They produce multiple seasonal shoots from a thick, compact rhizome. Each rises to a height of 2-4 and is lined by pairs of large, sharply lobed, bright green leaves. Bell shaped yellow flowers, a little over an inch long, open in succession along openly branched clusters at the shoot tips. K. palmata is the better known species, with gracefully nodding flowers. K. koreana is quite similar, but with outward- or upward-facing flowers. Part shade, loose, acid soil, moderate to regular watering. Hardy to 0oF or less.
