MANDEVILLA. Mostly Central and South America. These are vines with attractive foliage and showy, clustered trumpet shaped flowers. Culture and hardiness vary.

‘Alice Du Pont’. A beautiful though tender plant. It grows at a moderate pace except in the hottest-summer areas and is easily controlled by pruning. The leaves are large, broadly oval in outline, dark green and shiny. Clusters of pink, flat-faced 3-4" blossoms decorate the plant most of the year. Sun near the coast, light shade inland, reasonably well drained soil, regular watering. Best when grown in containers and moved indoors for the winter. 25-30oF.

laxa (suaveolens). Chilean jasmine. A vigorous, closely branched vine of 10-20'. It is densely clothed in drooping, rather narrow, bronze tinged leaves and adorned in summer by many clusters of large, fragrant white blossoms. Winter deciduous. Sun, reasonably well drained soil, moderate to regular watering. It performs best in hot summer areas. Around 15o, though the tops are damaged at higher temperatures.
