ORPHIUM frutescens. South Africa. An interesting, shrubby gentian ally, occasionally seen in the potted plant trade. It is bushy and upright, growing about 2' high. Closely set around the stems are rather narrow, shiny, bright green leaves up to 2" long. Beginning in late spring and continuing on older plants through fall, star-shaped 1½ blossoms open in dense clusters from fleshy buds. They are light to deep pink in color. Sun or light shade, well drained soil, moderate watering. Hardy to around 20oF.
