PINELLIA
ternata. Japan. A small, tuberous perennial of the arum family. In spring
it sends forth several three-parted leaves, resembling those of our eastern
jack-in-the-pulpits, on 6-10" stalks. Closely following these are the flowering
stems, each presenting a cupped, pale green spathe and a slender central
spadix or flower stalk, snaking upwards for 4" or more. An unusual
and attractive subject for containers and shady nooks in the open garden. Shade,
acid soil, moderate watering while in growth and bloom. Probably hardy to 10oF
or less.
