PITTOSPORUM. Africa, Asia, Australia, South Pacific. A large group of trees and shrubs, mostly native to tropical and subtropical regions. Several shrubby species are old standards in California landscaping, but selection of more interesting forms from seedling material has been a fairly recent novelty. The following have many uses based on their form and foliage, and are easily grown in coastal California. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate to occasional watering when established. They should be hardy to 20oF or less.

tenuifolium. A handsome large shrub or small tree, admired for its dense growth, slender black twigs and shiny oval, wavy-edged leaves. It is easily sheared and shaped. ‘Mrs. Gorman’ is nearly spherical in form and has crowded, deep green leaves. ‘Marjorie Channon’ is a bushy plant of (allegedly) 5’, with beautiful cream-margined leaves. ‘Silver Sheen’ is taller and a bit looser, with small, almost uniformly grey green leaves. ‘Buddy Gorman’ is an exceptionally compact but large-leaved selection, upright-oval in form; I would guess its ultimate height to be 8-10’. The leaves are bright green and exceptionally glossy. It was discovered in a seedling block by our production foreman, Zaturnino Flores, and named for our late propagation manager, whose career extended back to the old Leonard Coates Nurseries.
