RHODOHYPOXIS baurii. South Africa. Small, showy perennials prized for rock garden and pot culture. They have thickened, cormlike rhizomes from which clumps of hairy, grasslike leaves appear in spring. Beginning a few weeks later and often continuing well into the summer, they display many small 6-parted blossoms on individual 3-4" stems. A feature seldom mentioned is that many are delightfully fragrant. Picta has 1" white blossoms, each petal tipped with red. The variety platypetala is smaller but more prolific, with uniformly white blossoms. Tetra Red features exceptionally large, brightly colored blossoms (though something more like deep rose pink than red). Albrighton is a smaller plant with narrower leaves and glowing purplish red flowers. Great Scott is a short, profusely clumping, heavy blooming selection with red flowers. Our own selection, Pintado, has pale pink blossoms shading to deep red at the tips of the petals. It is also the most fragrant of all the cultivars I have grown. A chance seedling which appeared in a pot of this selection has proven to be an exceptional plant in its own right: Bees Fancy is a prolific, low plant with beautiful deep red flowers. Winter deciduous. Sun, well drained soil, moderate watering. Shield them from winter rains if possible. Probably hardy to 0oF.
