ROHDEA japonica. China, Japan. A thick-leaved perennial of the lily family, making low rosettes of thick, waxy leaves. The leaves are roughly sword-shaped, 12-18" long and deep green in color. Those of our traditional selection are ridged on the upper surface and irregularly striped with yellow. Two unnamed cultivars were received from Herb Kelly. One has leaves of solid, deep green. The second has marginal cream-yellow bands. Short spikes of yellowish flowers emerge from the crowns in spring. These are fairly inconspicuous, but the orange to scarlet berries which develop later are quite decorative. Light to medium shade, well drained acid soil, moderate watering. These are fine plants for containers. Hardy to around 10oF.
