STRANVAESIA (Photinia) niitakayamensis. Japan. Stranvaesia seems to be in the process of becoming a non-genus, with its members assigned to Photinia. I will use the old name while waiting to see how the tides of taxonomic battle turn. This is a willowy shrub of the rose family, growing perhaps 10-15’ high. It has limber, drooping branches which gracefully display narrow, pointed leaves up to 4" long. The leaves are deep green and shiny above, paler beneath. In summer it bears large, compound clusters of small white flowers at the shoot tips. These are followed by large bright red berries, which hang on through much of the winter, like those of the pyracanthas. Sun, most soils, moderate watering. Hardy to 15oF. or less.
