THERMOPSIS montana. Golden banner, false lupine. Western U.S. This is a rhizomatous perennial of the pea family, making small colonies over time. It has branched seasonal shoots up to 3 high. The stems are covered by silky hairs, and the leaves are softly hairy. Each is up to 3" long, divided into a triplet of dark green, lance-shaped leaflets. In summer it carries many golden yellow flowers in extended spikes above the foliage. In both their presentation and their individual form they closely resemble flowers of our native lupines.
