TRACHELIUM caeruleum. Throatwort. Mediterranean region. A showy perennial of the bellflower family, making dense clumps with a woody base. It has erect, branched seasonal stems which rise 1½-3. Rather densely set around them are toothed, lance-shaped leaves. These are deeply veined, glossy and dark, often heavily tinged with purple. In summer and fall the stems are topped by nearly flat, dense clusters of small tubular flowers. Their color may be purple or mauve to white. Sun, well drained soil. Hardy to 15-20oF.
