TRIFOLIUM
repens Atropurpureum. Dutch clover, shamrock.
There are actually a large number of ornamental clovers, including some California
natives, but few have been grown except by some wild-eyed enthusiasts. This
one is a creeping mat, useful in moist places for ground cover and enjoyed for
its colorful leaves. These are up to 3/4" broad, with 3-4 broad leaflets,
held on long, slender stalks. They are tinted reddish purple overall, with green
margins. Small white flowers are presented in short, dense clusters, mostly
in summer. It is evergreen in mild climates. Sun or light shade, most soils,
regular watering. Hardy to below 0oF.
