ADENOPHORA. Europe, Central Asia and Japan. Close relatives of the bellflowers, varying in habit and flower characteristics. They have clumps of basal crowns and leafy stems, which bear clusters of bell to funnel-shaped flowers along their length. Sun or light shade, most soils, regular watering. The following should be hardy to 0oF.

bulleyana. Material sold under this name generally belongs to other species, according to the experts. The plants we have grown from Thompson & Morgan seeds have broad, hairy basal leaves and branched, densely flowered sprays up to 3' high in summer. The clustered flowers are about 1/2" long, pale lavender in color.

liliifolia. The plant circulating under this name (probably erroneous) is a robust perennial making lush crowns of large, long-stalked, tapered leaves. From these rise stems 3' or more tall, each bearing dozens of nodding lavender bells. It is primarily summer blooming, but the show may extend from mid spring to fall in coastal climates.

takedae ‘Alba’. The species is distinguished by narrow leaves, slender, arching stems, and broad 1' bells. They are painted violet in the typical form, pure white in this seedling strain.
