AMPELOPSIS brevipedunculata. Blueberry climber. East Asia. “Old timers” in horticulture will remember Ampelopsis as the former genus of plants like the Virginia creeper, now known as Parthenocissus (some of them also described in this catalog). This one is retained in the original genus. It is a lush, vigorous vine of the grape family, growing as much as 20' high. The leaves have three deep, curved lobes, fancifully cut, and are 3-6" broad. In early summer dense clusters of tiny greenish flowers nestle among the leaves, giving little hint of the metallic blue to purple 1/3" berries which later develop. There is a further show in late fall and winter, when the leaves become a tapestry of yellow, orange and maroon. This is a fine subject for walls and fences, and even suitable for large scale ground cover. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate watering. Hardy to 0oF or less.
