CLEYERA japonica. Himalayan region, Japan. A camellia relative grown especially for its foliage. It is a shrub of 6 or more with arching branches. The leaves resemble smooth-edged, heavily lacquered camellia leaves and are heavily bronze-tinted in new growth. Small, sweetly fragrant white flowers and dark red berries enhance the overall effect in fall and winter. Variegata is distinguished by smaller, more closely spaced leaves having a beautiful tricolor effect. They combine creamy yellow margins with the usual green and bronze shades. Sun or light shade along the coast, light to medium shade inland, preferably acid, well drained soil, moderate watering. Good subjects for large containers. Hardy to 15oF or below.
