CORDYLINE australis. New Zealand. One of the Southern Hemisphere equivalents of our yuccas and agaves. It begins as a large crown of arching leaves, up to 3’ long. Slowly it develops a slightly contorted trunk, which eventually branches at odd intervals. Old plants bear large sprays of tiny, fragrant white blossoms, which develop into white to bluish berries. ‘Albertii’ has leaves with central bands of bright green, tinged with pink, and broad light yellow margins. ‘Purple Tower’ has dark purplish leaves; those of ‘Red Sensation’ are bronze. Sun or light shade, reasonably well drained soil, moderate to occasional watering (drought tolerant when established). Hardy to 18oF. or less.
