COSMOS atrosanguineus. Mexico. This plant comes as a bit of a surprise to those who think of all cosmos as giant annuals with airily dissected leaves. This is a tuberous perennial and of moderate stature, usually 2’ or less in the selection at hand. It produces many clustered shoots each year from a tuberous root crown. The stems are leafy, the leaves divided lengthwise and colored a deep, rich green. 2" flower heads float above the foliage on slender stalks from spring to fall. They are painted a striking, blackish maroon and scented like chocolate. Sun or light shade, well drained soil, moderate watering. Hardy to10oF or less.
