CRYPTOMERIA japonica Compressa. Japan, China. Dwarf cryptomeria. This should be a treat for those interested in dwarf conifers (admittedly not the current rage in California), as well as rock and container gardeners. It is much smaller and tighter than the more familiar C. j. Lobbii Nana, probably never more than 2-3. It is almost perfectly globe shaped and has very short branchlets thickly set with 1/2" shiny, deep green needles, tinged with maroon where they are exposed to the sun, particularly in winter. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate to occasional watering. Hardy to 10oF or less.
