HOMOGLOSSUM (Gladiolus). Another group of showy African bulbs adaptable to pot culture and rock garden use. The genus has been dismantled and combined with Gladiolus in some treatments; you may find it there in the next catalog. Its members have tightly clustered corms, from which shoots with erect grass-like, dark green leaves appear in fall. Our plants bloom in late winter and early spring, with several large, long-tubed blossoms opening in succession along an erect to arching stem. Plants of H. huttonii grow 1-2’ tall and have cupped, dark red blossoms with yellow markings. H. watsonium is more robust, with stems up to 3’ tall and bright red blossoms with segments opening star-like at the tips. Sun or light shade, well drained soil, moderate watering during growth and bloom, summer drought. Hardy to around 20oF.
