MARSILEA drummondii. Common Nardoo. I would like sometime to know the meaning of the common name. The plant is odd enough by itselfa fern ally posing as a giant clover. It forms dense clumps with short underground rhizomes. Slender stalks rise 8-12" from them, each bearing a clover-like pair of double leaflets at its summit. The leaflets are about ½" long, grey-green overall, and usually covered with silky hairs beneath. Odd pod-like spore capsules are borne on separate, usually shorter stalks. This is an interesting novelty for containers, shade gardens and poolside plantings. It is best in part shade, with reasonably well drained soil and constant moisture. Hardy to around 20oF. when established.
