PLATYCODON grandiflorum. Balloon flower. China, Japan. A summer blooming campanula ally with erect, leafy 1-3' stems from a compact crown. The 2" leaves are oval and bright green in color. Large bowl shaped flowers open from inflated buds at the shoot tips. Winter deciduous. We grow Mariesii, a 1' to 1½' plant of unusually profuse growth, with lavender blue flowers, and the seed strain Komachi, even smaller and more congested. The Fuji series includes large flowered strains in individual flower colors(so-called) blue, white and pink. Sun, most soils, moderate watering. Hardy to 0oF or less.
