RAOULIA australis. New Zealand. A tiny perennial related to the strawflowers (one would never guess it except under a hand lens). It forms a tight, almost crusty mat, crowded with tiny, grey-woolly leaves. The flower heads appear merely as pale yellow specks on the foliage in summer. A fine subject for rock gardens and containers, gaining character as it piles up on itself in age. Sun near the coast, light shade inland, well drained soil, moderate watering. Hardy to 15oF or less.
