CLIANTHUS puniceus. Parrot’s beak. With some pruning this New Zealander is a graceful, arching shrub. Left to its own devices, it is nearly a vine, scrambling to 10’ or more. It has attractive dark green, drooping leaves about 6" long, divided into many leaflets. In summer clusters of pendant beak shaped 2" blossoms are displayed along the stems. White Heron’, ‘Pink Flamingo’ and ‘Red Cardinal’, from Duncan & Davies Nurseries have the flower colors you might expect. These are reputed to be more compact and heavier blooming than typical material. Sun or light shade, reasonably well drained, fertile soil, moderate watering. Hardy to 20oF or less.
