CORYLOPSIS pauciflora. Japan. Winter hazel. This is one of many beautiful shrubs of the witch-hazel family which are sadly neglected in California. It usually grows 5-8 tall, with slender, arching, slightly zigzag stems. In early spring small bell shaped, soft yellow flowers with a delightful fragrance hang from the bare stems in short, narrow clusters. The leaves which follow are up to 3" long, conspicuously toothed and deeply veined. Dark green during the growing season, they turn attractive shades of yellow before dropping in late fall. Sun or light shade, reasonably well drained, non-alkaline soil, moderate watering. Probably hardy to 0oF.
