GLECHOMA hederacea ‘Variegata’. Europe, widespread in the more typical form. Ground-ivy, runaway Robin (this one seems particularly appropriate). I hesitate to unleash this plant on California gardens, but the nursery has yielded, at least temporarily, to popular demand. It has slender stems which take root as they travel, forming broad mats. At each node is a rosette of nearly round, scallop-edged leaves, a little over 1" across, splashed irregularly with yellowish cream. Clusters of small pale blue flowers are sprinkled over the plant in spring and summer. It is useful as a small scale ground cover and attractive in hanging baskets. However, it can be invasive in moister parts of the garden. Sun or part shade, most soils, moderate to regular watering. Hardy to 10oF or less.
