INDOCALAMUS tessellatus (Sasa tessellata). China. An elegant bamboo, officially of the “running” type but usually quite moderate in its rate of travel. It has slender 3-6’ stems enclosed in narrow tan bracts. At and near the stem ends are dark green leaves up to 2’ long, which droop gracefully. An excellent subject for (strong-walled) containers, tolerating extreme root-binding, and a nearly essential part of any oriental garden. Sun or light shade near the coast, part shade inland, most soils, moderate watering. Hardy to around 0oF.
