MONOCHAETUM volcanicum. Costa Rica. A small shrub closely allied to Tibouchina and resembling it in several respects. It grows upright to 2-3' and is closely branched. The leaves are roughly oval in form, furry, dark green and deeply veined. It bears many broad-petalled blossoms, each a little over 1" across and dark purplish pink in color, most heavily in fall, with a scattering at other times of the year. Sun or shade near the coast, part shade inland, rich soil, moderate watering. Evidently hardy to 20oF or less, though the foliage is injured at 25oF.
