PHAEDRANASSA carmioli. South America. This is one of many showy but lesser-known South American bulbs of the amaryllis family. The individual bulbs are large and long-lived, though they constantly produce new offsets. From each come several broad, thick leaves with narrow basal stalks. Each leaf is a foot or more long in all, and deep green in color. At various times of the year–though predominantly in spring and fall–sturdy stems poke above the leaves, carrying umbrella-shaped clusters of nodding, tubular flowers. The flowers are deep red with green tips. This is a fine bulb for large pots and tubs, and thrives as well in protected spots in the open garden. It prefers light shade and reasonably well drained soil, with only moderate watering. It has no real dormancy in our climate. Hardy to 15oF. or less, though the leaves are burned in hard frosts.
