SINOJACKIA xylocarpa. China. Not only is the name good for tongue acrobatics. This styrax ally is also quite beautiful. This is a full-headed tree, of moderate growth, usually under 20' high at maturity. It has broad, pointed 2" leaves, bright green and shiny above, paler beneath. In late spring it bears clouds of white 1" blossoms, very much like those of Styrax, which nod gracefully on long, slender stalks. Each has a showy central brush of yellow anthers. The bell-shaped seed capsules which follow are also ornamental, as is the gold fall color of the leaves. This is one of those trees which remains virtually unknown but should have become popular long ago. Give it an honored spot in the front garden. Another of many treasures received from Piroche Nurseries in Canada. Give it sun, reasonably well drained, non-alkaline soil, and moderate to regular watering. Its hardiness is uncertain, but should be 15oF or less.
