STYLIDIUM adnatum. Trigger plant. Australia. The trigger plants are a diverse group, some of them looking almost like grasses when not in bloom. Their unique feature, in otherwise normal-looking 5-petalled flowers, is the fusion of the stamens and pistil into a column, which is held down under tension and releases suddenly when touched by a visiting insect or playful human. Many are good rock garden plants, unfortunately difficult to grow. S. adnatum is a mounding perennial under 1’ tall, with nearly prostrate stems. Lining them are dense brushes of narrow bluish green 1/2” leaves. Clusters of little pink flowers open in long succession at the shoot tips throughout the growing season. This is clearly one of the easy species to grow. Sun or light shade near the coast, part shade inland, well drained soil, moderate watering. Hardy to 20-25oF.
