UGNI molinae. Chilean guava. Chile and Argentina. One of the most beautiful shrubs of the myrtle family, growing round and dense to about 6 high. It has closely set oval, convex leaves, up to 1" long. These are deep green and glossy above, paler and fuzzy beneath. New growth is shinier still, and painted in bronze and purple. Small white flowers with a pink flush and dense brushes of stamens decorate the plants in summer. Then come wonderfully fragrant and quite delicious deep red fruits. Sun or light shade, most soils, moderate watering. Hardy to 15oF. or less.
