VIGNA caracolla. Snail vine. South America. A tropical vine of the pea family, somehow adaptable to life outdoors in the temperate zone. It may grow to 20 high, with twining stems and a lush covering of bright green leaves, each divided into three broad leaflets. The 1-2" flowers are borne throughout the warmer months. They would be of normal form for the peas, except that the keel (the portion enclosing the stamens and pistil) is twisted into a spiral. The narrow seed pods are of more familiar form. Sun or light shade, rich soil, regular watering. The tops are damaged at around 25oF., but established plants will resprout after harder freezes.
