WACHENDORFIA thyrsiflora. One of my favorite plant names, attached to a beautiful South African perennial, related to the kangaroo paws. It grows from a profusely branched, tuberous rootstock, forming small thickets. The lower leaves are 2-3' long, relatively narrow, and deeply ribbed, resembling those of seedling palms. In summer, stout blooming stems rise to a height of 3' or so, carrying dense clusters of 3/4" yellow blossoms. Sun, reasonably well drained soil, constant moisture during growth and bloom. Hardy to 20oF or less.
