LYSIMACHIA. Worldwide, mostly in temperate regions. A large group of annuals, herbaceous perennials and a few shrubs of the primrose family, with a wide variety of growth habits. Most have paired leaves and small, 5-parted flowers. The following are hardy perennials with tall, leafy stems. They are interesting subjects for the background of the perennial border. Sun or light shade, reasonably well drained, non-alkaline soil, regular watering. Hardy to 0oF or less.
ciliata Purpurea. A robust, many-stemmed plant, growing erect to 2-4' high. The stems are lined by pairs of striking reddish purple leaves, broadly lance shaped and up to 6" long. The flowers are bright yellow and about 3/4" across, carried individually in the leaf-axils.
clethroides. Another robust species, making large clumps with 2-3' stems. The leaves are broad, bright green and shiny. The flowers are white, only about 1/2" across but carried in long, dense clusters above the foliage.
