SCHOENOPLECTUS (lacustris ssp.) tabernaemontani Zebrinus. Zebra rush. Japan. A strong contender for the strangest name among our plant menagerie. It also has more intrinsic qualities of interest. Dense clumps are formed by means of short underground rhizomes. Hollow, cylindrical stems appear in spring and summer, rising as much as 6' (3-4' is more usual). They are marked at intervals with rings of creamy white. The plant dies to the ground in winter. A striking plant for tubs, shady nooks and water gardens. Sun or shade, most soils, constant moisture during the growing season. Probably hardy to 0oF or less.
