Plants Tolerant of Heavy Soils

These are the plants for sites that make the best gardener weep: Those with dense, clayey soils, often saturated in winter. As they dry, these same soils take on the appearance and consistency of concrete, making summer gardening more like a heavy construction project. Gradually incorporating large-particle organic matter into the soil and elevating the site are good long-term solutions, but what to do more immediately about a large "death zone"? The plants listed below can help. If these fail, it's time to call in the earthmovers. Many of these plants are also quite beautiful in their own right. As conditions improve, you may want to keep them right where they are, and build a less rugged garden around them.
