Stiff branched spreading shrub can become flat-topped over time. Masses of fragrant white flowers cover the small green leaves in spring or early summer. Some branchlets become spine-like as they age. This species is the hardiest ceanothus, growing on well drained mountain slopes up to 10,000 feet. It needs good drainage, sun and occasional to little watering.
